State police say Old Lyme brothers planned post Irene burglaries
Post on: 2011-09-05 By: admin
Two Old Lyme brothers who state police say planned to burglarize unoccupied homes and cottages in their town during Hurricane Irene and its aftermath were arrested last week.
Police said Sunday they had received information on Aug. 27 that Jason Barberi, 28, and Ryan Barberi, 23, both of whom live at the Bayberry Motor Inn at 416 Shore Road, were planning to break into a vacant home on Shore Road. Old Lyme police staked out the home during the hurricane and at 1 a.m. the next day spotted the brothers trying to break into the house. The pair fled. Two hours later police apprehended the two men back at the Bayberry Motor Inn and charged them with second-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny.
Police said they discovered the two men were planning numerous other burglaries and larcenies. They are slated to appear in Superior Court Oct. 12.
