Girl Scouts marking 100th anniversary by making quilt
Post on: 2011-11-02 By: admin
Girl Scouting is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and the Bayberry Service Unit (Ipswich, Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley and Salisbury) is commemorating this special event with a 100th anniversary quilt. Both current and past Girl Scouts are invited to celebrate the Girl Scouts' centennial by creating squares for the quilt.
The quilt will have 100 original squares, plus a center medallion and four corner squares that will feature Girl Scout insignia and slogans. All current Girl Scout troops are invited to contribute an 8-inch block. In addition, past Girl Scouts, Girl Scout troops and leaders are also invited to submit squares for the quilt. Contributors can create a traditional pieced quilt square, a square featuring appliqué© or iron-on fabric or a square decorated with fabric markers.
"The Girl Scouts' Mission Statement is 'Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place,'" said Ellena Preston, service unit coordinator for the Bayberry Service Unit. "We're delighted to celebrate this special anniversary year with a project that spans the generations of Girl Scouting and gives current Girl Scouts the opportunity to connect with past Girl Scouts."
Squares are due by Dec. 15. The quilt will be assembled and quilted in January and February and unveiled at the annual Bayberry Service Unit Mother-Daughter Tea on March 11.
For more information or to receive a quilt square, contact Karen Schmuch at 978-948-5026.
Teen gets 6 years in Port stabbing
SALEM — A Salisbury teen will be spending up to six years in state prison after admitting he stabbed a Plum Island man in downtown Newburyport in May.
Joseph C. Poaletta, 19, whose last known address was at the Harbor Schools residence in Newbury, avoided a prison sentence of up to seven years by pleading guilty Thursday in Salem Superior Court.
Two days after a powerful nor'easter brought an early dose of winter to the region, many in Greater Newburyport, including a significant portion of Byfield and close to half of Amesbury and West Newbury, remained without power yesterday.
While local officials were hopeful that power would be restored to areas by last evening, they said some areas realistically may be in the dark until Thursday.
At one point during the storm, about 60 percent of Amesbury residents, 23 percent in Newburyport and all of Byfield were without power Sunday.
