Saturday May 22, 2004 Fresh flavours in Cameron Highlands Story & pictures by Pamela Phang Kooi YoongYOU HOO SEAFOOD RESTAURANT3, Jalan Besar, BrinchangCameron Highlands, Pahang(05) 491 1726Open everyday from 11.30am to 3pm, and again from 6pm to 1pm. Directions: Take the road from Tanah Rata to Brinchang town. It is within the first block of shophouses, on the left. The Indonesian Curry Fish is a real winner. Our friend in Cameron Highlands had recommended it. So instead of the usual steam-boat affair, we decided to visit the You Hoo Seafood Restaurant and check it out. We did not regret it. The dish came with a moderately thick gravy with the aroma of curry leaves wafting into our nostrils. The “Kam Foong” fish was surprisingly fresh, crispy and succulent. “A crunchy fried outer layer, but really succulent inside, with spices that hit the taste buds . . . hmmm, really nice,” our friends Richard and Chew declared. The curry, which had chilli padi, hinted of condensed milk giving the curry its creaminess rather than coconut milk. The lady boss, Mrs Goh, recommended their specialty: Sizzling Hotplate Tauhu. It was a clear favourite with the children with its thick egg yolk (minus egg white) sauce, carrots and green peas. There was also a generous amount of shiitake mushrooms heaped on top of the fresh taufu. The sauce and taufu just fused together in the mouth. We saw many of the other customers tucking into a dish that came wrapped in aluminum foil. It looked like another house specialty, and Goh confirmed that their Herbal Pig Trotters is indeed an all-time favourite. We wasted no time ordering one ourselves. The minute we opened the foil, the rich aromas of Chinese herbs filled the air. We could clearly identify cordyceps (tong kwai), red dates and yuk chook bark amongst the herbs. Goh explained that the trotters are first boiled with the herbs to allow the flavours to seep into the meat and then wrapped and steamed in foil.Mention Cameron Highlands, and everyone will think: fresh vegetables. Goh said we could have a choice of any vegetable we saw here. It was no idle boast as the Brinchang market is directly behind the shop and the kitchen staff just have to sprint over for their ingredients. My mother was very taken up by a big bean that looks like a giant, flat French bean with fine hair. We found out that local folk call it the sun seen tau (Fairy Bean). We opted for it to be fried with belacan. Surprisingly, in spite of its size, the beans were not tough or stringy but succulent and sweet. We had also seen lots of fresh, thick stalked leeks in the morning market. It was too tempting to resist. Goh said it could be “fried plain”, but a better way would be to fry it with slivers of roast pork. True enough, the leeks were a delight with their peculiarly strong taste. Our local friend had suggested we try the restaurant’s Sweet Potato Leaves Fried with Garlic as these are usually home grown and free from pesticide. It was a good suggestion as the stalks were thick and crunchy, while the leaves were sweet. The trick to getting the best fragrance from it is to eat it hot. Apart from the à la carte menu, budget conscious customers or those on a tight schedule can opt for the economy mixed rice. Ten vegetables and meats are prepared; two vegetables and a meat dish from here cost only RM3.50.Those who insist that a holiday in Cameron Highlands is not the same without a steamboat meal will be happy to know that You Hoo Restaurant serves this classic, complete with plates heaped high with vegetables, meat and seafood. There are three types of steamboat soups to choose from: traditional, herbal and spicy tom yam. You can also opt for a steamboat with two soup compartments. W
